Rules

The theme

  • Theme: Offline. Build something that works with zero internet.
  • The airplane-mode test: turn off wifi and data, and it still does its job. No cloud calls, no outside APIs, no "connecting...".
  • Local is fine: local AI models, on-device storage, a server running on your own machine. Downloading things once during setup is fine; using it needs no connection.
  • Your demo video has to show it working with the internet off.

The build

  • The idea can be old. The code cannot. Write it all during the build week, Monday 18:00 UTC to Friday 18:00 UTC.
  • Bring any AI model you like. It's open.
  • Capped at 40 builders. Check in before kickoff or your spot releases at the bell.
  • Solo builders only. One person, one entry, whether you build it yourself or your AI agent does.
  • Open-source your repo and ship a demo video.

New this Yard: two awards

  • Builders who ship crown the Champion. Members crown Members' Choice. Nobody votes in both.

The Champion: ranked by the builders

  • Ship a build and you rank your top 3 other builds: 1st is worth 3 points, 2nd is worth 2, 3rd is worth 1. Most points wins.
  • Your ranking unlocks once you've opened every other build (its demo, code or Try it link). If there are more than 20 other builds, Hackyard assigns you 20 at random instead.
  • You can only rank builds you've opened, never your own, and never the same build twice.
  • Say in one line why your #1 deserves it. If it wins, your line is shown on the Champion's page, without your name.
  • Rank a full top 3 to be eligible to win. Skip it and you keep your badges, but you can't be crowned.
  • Ties go to more 1st-place picks, then the earlier submission.
  • The Champion wins $50 cash, the one-of-one Champion hoodie, and a year backed by Hackyard.

Members' Choice: picked by the members

  • Any member whose account existed before kickoff gets one vote, as long as they didn't ship in this Yard. Claimed a spot but didn't ship? You vote here.
  • Open a build before you vote for it, and say in one line why it's your pick.
  • The winner gets the Members' Choice badge.

Fair play

  • If fewer than 3 builders rank, the Members' Choice winner is crowned Champion.
  • Every point and vote stays hidden until voting closes. At the crown, every ballot is published without names so anyone can recount, along with any votes removed and why.
  • Three wins in a row is the max. Win three Yards back to back and you sit out the next one as an exhibition builder.
